From Photo to Masterpiece: How Custom Portraits Actually Get Made

By La Sombra Art Studio · 6 min read

Ever wondered how a regular photo becomes a hand-painted work of art? Here is the whole journey.

A custom portrait can feel like magic — but there’s a real, friendly process behind it. If you’ve been curious how it works (or nervous to ask), here’s exactly what happens from your photo to your finished piece.

Every portrait starts with the right tools and a good photo.

Step 1: It Starts With Your Photo

Send us a clear photo — or a few — of whoever (or whatever) you want painted. The better the photo, the better the art. A pet, a person, the whole family, all of it works.

Then we chat about the style and the feeling you’re going for.

Step 2: We Sketch And Plan

Before any real paint hits, we map out the design and show you the direction. Colors, mood, layout. You approve it first, so there are no surprises.

Want a tweak? Now’s the time. This is a team effort.

Step 3: We Bring It To Life

Now the fun part — we build it by hand, layer by layer, until it looks just right. This is where a flat photo becomes something with depth, soul, and texture.

Depending on size and detail, it takes anywhere from hours to a few days.

Step 4: It Comes Home To You

We deliver, ship, or hand off your finished piece — ready to hang and treasure. Many become family heirlooms.

Curious what your photo could become? Reach out and let’s talk about it.

Got an idea? Let’s make it real.

Custom art, murals, apparel, or a wild idea you can’t shake — we’d love to hear it. First chat is always free.
